Who's Who

In the UK census returns have been taken every 10 years starting earlier than 1841, ones prior to 1841 contain little information.
Currently the public can view the census returns from 1841 to 1901 inclusive for the UK at the PRO (Public Record Office)  in London.
County record offices usually have copies for there county and sometimes bordering counties.

Census returns have been taken every 10 years in the UK since 1801.

The 1801 - 1831 census returns are nearly all destroyed.

The 1841 census does not give the "Relationship to Head" field, and does not give the place where the person was born. Also ages for adults were rounded to nearest 5(i think) years.

From 1851 the census returns give the "Relationship to Head of household" and also record the place and county where born.

1851 / 1891 DORSET CENSUS

If you are using the 1851/1891 Dorset CD's from the SDFHS you'll be interested to know that I wrote the software (Folio Search) for them. http://www.foliosearch.co.uk

Also if you use Gordon Beavington's 1851 census CD's (highly recommended) you'll be interested to read about my FREE software CenSort, that helps search through all his transcriptions http://www.duncanweir.co.uk/censort
