FOr some time we had been searching for the deaths of Vincent and Ann WORNER both baptised in 1814 in Martock.
I found only one Vincent Worner in the GRO index - he died in 1877 in Kingston Upon Hull - a very long way from Martock. But he is not buried in any of the public cemetries in Hull - would his remains have been returned to be buried with his family (in Bristol, see below) ? The trail is a long and difficult one - Then I found George Warner, a housepainter in the 1881 census, born in Wilcombe Somerset - by age is he is Vincent and Ann's son. Was Vincent visiting him in Hull ? Another Worner researcher, Carole, discovered in the 1871 census - Vincent, Ann, George and Hannah NORNER in Bristol - George, 16 was a housepainter !! In the 1881 census Ann WARREN is living with her CAVILL grandchildren - Mary, Charles and Samuel and Marys 2month son, William. ( Sarah Ann WORNER had married Job CAVILL) So now we need to find Ann's death, possibly in Bristol. The spelling variations on the name WORNER continue to defy us !! Diane Cole |

Worners of Martock
My great-grandfather, George Worner (b. Martock 1832) emigrated to new Zealand with his wife & eight children in 1877. His father George (b. 1801) was Ann Worner's brother.
Our family records show that Ann & Vincent Worner emigrated to Australia. They have some descendants living in Sydney I understand. Ann's brothers John (b. 1797) and Emanuel (b. 1809) apparently both emigrated to Australia also - Emanuel died en route. |

No Vincent and Ann did not come to Australia - there are no records of them in the NSW BDMS - it now seems probable that they moved to Bristol, then Vincent was in Hull, Ann either returned or remained in Bristol then moved to London with daughter Hannah Maria Ellen WORNER (1891 census) and died there in 1898
There son William migrated to western NSW - yes descendents still live in NSW, as well as one branch who moved to WA. Emmanuels family settled in Tasmania and there are still descendents there. John settled in rural Victoria and the NSW cousins have contact with descendents there. If you are of the NZ Worners, do you know Marie Batty who has been in touch over the years with Bill Worner (now of Tweed Heads NSW) ? |

Worners of Martock
Diane
Thank you for your reply. Yes, I am a New Zealand Worner, one of George's descendants, most of whom settled in the central South Island. I now live in Auckland. Marie Batty is my first cousin and it was she who provided me with the details of where the various Worner families went to - that was some years ago and obviously more research has been done now. I had assumed you were english but reading your recent message I gather that you live in Australia. I have been doing the odd bit of research into the Worner history over the last couple of years, and I'm finding it incredibly interesting (and time consuming!) and there always seems to be some new trail to investigate. Best wishes with your research, Graham Worner |

Hi Graham
The Worners are one of the most extensive families I have investigated and its great fun. There are plenty of resources around now to help fill out the family as it dispersed in the 19th century. My copmuter tells me that Marie is my fifth cousin once removed, so that probably applies to you too. I am a descendent of Matilda Jane Worner, her grandparents were also Thomas Worner and Ruth Glover, but through their son Joseph, so I am not a close line to Bill Worner and the rest here in Australia. We have several cousins on the Net - Clare Bailey in Northern Ireland, Ces Worner and Alan Austin the UK, Howard Benson here in Aus, and Carole Forster, who liaises for Bill and John Jones (who don't have computers), and me and you. THere are others out there - a small family in Tasmania and some in Victoria - although I think our oldest living Australian Worner is Howard Worner now in Wollongong, who is well over 90!! I have a lot of information from Bill and others to fill in the tree, but don't know what you have and how far you want to go. Let me know if I can fill any gaps for you. Regards for now Diane |
